The Nature Explore Day Event at Camp Wa-Ri-Ki has been very popular and growing each year in attendees and fun things to do. We’re reposting some news and photos from past events as we plan for this year. Don’t miss it — sign up for the newsletter in the pop-up —we’ll also send some fun promotional specials on T-shirts soon.

A happy group of day visitors made camp at Wa-Ri-Ki last weekend as they attended the second annual “Nature Explore” club event — a joint offering by Kiwanis Camp Wa-Ri-Ki, in partnership with The Parks Foundation of Clark County,Vancouver Summer Adventure, and the US Forest Service on August 8th.

The event included short hikes to event learning stations where a number of show and tell sessions were held to help the children, and even Moms and Dads, learn about the beautiful natural surroundings the Camp affords.  Paul Perdone, a federal geologist from Vancouver whose grandsons were in attendance, presented some of the natural rocks and sediments in the area.  All the campers made themselves an official name tag, cut from a tree branch.  The Camp paid for a bus to bring attendees up from Vancouver to the event.

Event Chairperson, Sandy Hensley from the Boulevard Kiwanis Club led the Conservation Pledge and the Smokey the Bear song in the open air gathering on benches under a grove of trees.  Caretaker and Camp Host, Mike Richards, was on hand to help the kids learn about use of water at the camp as a protection from forest fires.  Mike is also a remodeling contractor who is putting his talents to work on remodeling what will soon become a new retreat and counselor center in the Camp Office building — watch for a news report on that project.

Camp Board President, Michael McNulty, who also attended the event, said, “We’re looking forward to providing more day Camp experiences that get kids unplugged and out in nature, like this one does.  When our new combination retreat and counselor center opens toward the end of this year, we look forward to putting a new revenue stream to use in serving our mission for helping fulfill the vision for Wa-Ri-Ki.”  That vision, which definitely was at play Saturday, includes “growth and adventure for children, families and community organizations to become better stewards of the earth.”

Camp Wa-Ri-Ki isa natural forested environment on the Washougal River for educational and physical recreational programs for children, families, community and church groups, with a mission to provide an outdoor experience that offers optimal child development and community growth through recreational, educational and leadership opportunities.  We’re current seeking donations to help upgrade the Camp, and numerous volunteer opportunities are available.  Golfers, might like to participate in the First Annual Camp Wa-Ri-Ki Golf Tournament, at Skamania Lodge this September 19th.

We’ve prepared a slideshow of the Nature Explore Event so you can review a quick slice of the goings on at the Camp last Saturday:
